Newlyweds :: Matt + Kate

Having a muli-faceted “role” in the weddings I shoot is maybe one of my favorite parts. Some of my previous titles include:

  • friend [friendographer]
  • roommate [photomate?]
  • matron of honor [matronographer] (one-time deal…won’t do it again, but don’t regret it!)
  • sister [sistographer]

After Kate & Matt’s nuptials, I can add coworker [colleagrapher…?] to the list! I have the distinct pleasure of working with both the bride and the groom at MizzouRec, where we have each spent the better part of the past 6 or 7 years together (if my memory and math are serving me right at this hour).

Following their amazing New Year’s Eve engagement in New Zealand (props again, Matt — first engagement of 2015 in the world. Probably…), I may or may not have been the first “to-do” item to be checked off the list. #honored

The big day started at Stoney Creek Inn, where the girls had a fun and relaxing morning of hair, makeup, music and laughter. Love the detail of the hangers with each bridesmaid’s name…and the fact that Kate thought to bring and use 3M hooks for displaying the dresses!

The robes are a special tradition with Kate and her cousins/bridesmaids — they’ll swap and wear them again in September for Cara’s wedding!

After we left the girls we headed over to have some fun with the boys, who were getting ready at the Rec. The Rec? Oh, yes, the Rec. Most people are aware of how amazing the facility is when it comes to fitness and aquatic spaces, but the history of the complex means there is quite a bit to offer ‘backstage” as well! The Old Varsity Club & Lounge are restored spaces that offer the perfect setting for a group of guys getting ready for a wedding. (I think Matt may have had a little fun all dressed up at the big conference table…)

Kate and her bridesmaids finished getting ready at the Reynolds Alumni Center adjacent to the outdoor ceremony site of Traditions Plaza on Mizzou’s campus. I love the shot of the three girls walking in the room and seeing Kate in her wedding dress for the first time!

There was also a special “reveal” of Kate to her dad and brother, characteristically including a sentimental gift…and a selfie. It was the perfect balance.

Rain clouds threatened and hovered over the ceremony site in the hour before it was to begin, but by 3:00 PM it had all cleared up and the sun was shining!

Loved this special way that the couple honored family members at the ceremony, including Kate’s mom who passed away just over 2 years ago.

[Funny story about those steps: Traditions Plaza is a relatively new site on campus and while it’s perfectly designed for a wedding, it was lacking in one area — the steps in the amphitheater are a bit steep for a bride in a long dress and heels. So Kate measured the existing (during their engagement shoot!) and her Dad built several wooden boxes to use during the ceremony! Here’s the funny part: I believe the stairs were sold less than 30 minutes following the ceremony to a family whose daughter is getting married there next year. How about that?!]

Immediately following the ceremony, we stole away for a few minutes to get some “just married” photos.

[It took some work on my part, but I think I convinced them to love putting their foreheads together…can you tell?!]

When some biker dudes on the Quad offer to let the groomsmen pose with their bikes…you say heck yes!?

After our time on campus, the wedding party crew headed out to Les Bourgeois for some pre-reception fun — we had pushed our luck a little too far for the rain clouds at that point, but were still able to catch a sweet moment in the vineyards before heading back to town.

One of my favorite parts of the whole day [now that I’m a parent, maybe?!] is capturing the father/daughter and mother/son dances. I especially loved the moments we were able to capture here, both the fun and the tender.

Before I “clocked out” for the night and got to put my wedding-guest dancing shoes on (another perk of the multi-faceted role!), I got this quick pic of Kate with her “Wedding Belles” — the hardworking, behind-the-scenes crew responsible for making the Event Planner’s wedding go exactly as she’d hoped (including holding off the rain)! And that’s me there, with the bride herself — couldn’t quite swing the selfie with the pro gear, so we upgraded.

Thank you again, Kate and Matt, for entrusting me to capture your special day — I was honored to be a part of it, and I promise I won’t make you put your foreheads together again! (Unless, you know, someday I’m taking family photos…!)
